Chief Ken Smith, Jr. of the Marcus Hook-Trainer Fire Department told the news outlet that he has no idea why the children were in the building.
Crews were called to the 200 block of East 10th Street just before 6 p.m., area fire companies said.
Firefighters from Delaware and Chester counties and New Castle, Delaware were called to battle the blaze, which quickly escalated to a 4-alarm fire, according to Delaware County Emergency Services.
The warehouse is located at a contaminated site that has been in the process of demolition, remediation, and development, according to unconfirmed reports from a local community organization.
Firefighters worked all night to place the fire under control. However, some crews remained on the scene Tuesday morning to put out hot spots, according to Delaware County officials.
A video of the aftermath shows the charred warehouse, exposed roof and pipes, and piles of building materials.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
